Therapy for Christians: Isn’t My Faith Enough?

“Shouldn’t I just pray about it?”

“If I trust God, why would I need counseling?”

“Does needing therapy mean my faith isn’t strong enough?”

If you’ve ever asked yourself these questions, you’re not alone.

As Christians, we know the power of prayer. We turn to God in all seasons, seek His guidance through Scripture, and trust that He is with us through what we face.

Life can still be difficult even when we have a strong faith. Relationships can become complicated, painful experiences can stay with us, and emotions or thoughts can sometimes feel difficult to understand. You may be showing up for your family, going to work, serving others, and even sharing a happy life on social media while quietly wondering why you don’t feel like yourself.

Sometimes, the people who seem to be doing the best on the outside are carrying the most on the inside. For some, that pain can become overwhelming and begin to affect their sense of hope.

Creating space to talk about what you are experiencing can be an important part of caring for yourself and allowing others to walk alongside you.

I believe faith and therapy can both be meaningful parts of the healing journey.

Scripture encourages us to value wise counsel. Sometimes, God meets us in ways we may not expect, through a trusted friend, pastor, mentor, Christian community, or licensed mental health professional. Reaching out for support can be an expression of wisdom, courage, and stewardship, creating an opportunity to better understand your story and take the next step toward healing.

A healthy Christian community can provide belonging, accountability, spiritual growth, and meaningful relationships. Therapy can provide a private, supportive space to process what you’re experiencing while honoring the role your faith plays in your life.

What Does Therapy Actually Look Like?

Therapy is a collaborative relationship with a licensed mental health professional where you can come as you are and explore what is happening in your life without having to pretend that everything is okay.

You might seek therapy because you’re experiencing anxiety, grief, trauma, relationship struggles, low self-worth, a difficult transition, or simply a sense that something feels stuck.

Therapy may help you:

  • Understand patterns affecting your thoughts, emotions, and relationships

  • Process difficult or painful experiences

  • Develop healthier ways of coping

  • Strengthen communication and relationships

  • Reconnect with your strengths and values

  • Navigate change and transitions

  • Build greater self-awareness and resilience

I use evidence-based approaches to provide clinical knowledge, guidance, and practical tools while walking alongside you as you explore what healing can look like for you.

What Is Christian-Informed Therapy?

You may be looking for a Christian therapist, Christian counseling, or faith-integrated therapy in California or Arizona because you want your faith to be understood as part of who you are and part of your mental health journey.

Christian-informed therapy brings evidence-based mental health care together with faith when that is something you desire in your counseling experience. Your faith can be thoughtfully and respectfully included in ways that are meaningful to you.

Depending on your needs and preferences, this may include exploring:

  • How your faith shapes your identity and values

  • Scripture as a source of encouragement and reflection

  • Prayer and other faith-based practices

  • Spiritual growth and questions about faith

What If My Faith Feels Complicated?

Faith can be deeply meaningful, but that doesn’t mean every season of faith feels simple or the same for everyone.

Maybe you are reconnecting with God after a difficult season. Maybe you have questions about what you believe. Perhaps you have experienced church hurt or disappointment, or you feel like you’ve been going through the motions without feeling connected to God.

My role is to meet you where you are and support you with compassion and respect.

You Can Have Faith and Still Need Support

You can love God and still struggle.

You can have faith and still experience grief, anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, disappointment, or seasons of uncertainty.

Receiving support does not take away from your faith. It can give you space to process what you are carrying, recognize your strengths, and move forward with greater clarity and hope.

Sometimes the next step is simply being honest about where you are.
